American going to Korea with no visa, do I need plane ticket and proof of sufficient funds?

I saw online that if you don’t have a visa you must prove you have a ticket (means to leave the country) and sufficient funds to live there. I’m an American staying for less than 30 days, is this necessary? I plan to take a boat from China, how strict are customs at the docks?
