Hello,
I am planning on taking a trip to Guangdong in November to visit a friend. I checked online and The ticket prices for a round trip ticket was $900. I will be staying in Guangdong for the month of November….
Ok so my questions are:
The website I checked for the plane tickets also had an option to check for hotel rooms, however none of the hotels on the site had anything available, which makes sense because I was looking for a month long booking. However I am curious what should I do to look for a hotel in which I can stay for a month?
My second question is I will be bringing around $2,000 USD worth of Yuan along on the trip (excluding plane ticket and hotel costs) would this be enough for me? I don’t plan on shopping or eating out everyday, but I want to make sure I’m not going to get stranded for weeks in China living in the gutter and starving waiting till I can go back home lol.
Thanks!

Book a room in any hotel in Guangdong for a couple of days ; this will give you time to look around for another hotel which can accommodate you for a month. However, your friend should be able to advise you about this, or even find the most suitable hotel before you arrive.
$2,000 should be perfectly adequate for a month if you do not intend doing a lot of shopping or eating out.
A word of caution : China has “special” prices for tourists. Your friend can play the shopper for you … especially if he/she is a local Chinese.
$2000 should be plenty for a month of day to day living in China. Food is very cheap especially if you avoid high end tourist eateries. You should take an ATM and credit card as a back up for emergencies. I would book a hotel only for a few days until you get your bearings. Hotel rates and services will vary greatly so you can shop around once there. Also if you have a Chinese friend there be sure to get their input in that nothing beats local knowledge. If you don’t speak Chinese start learning. A little knowledge of the language will get you a long way. Most of all have fun, you will love your experience.
I’d recommend not to take any chances with what’s listed on the web and trust your friend to book a hotel for you.
2000 is enough already.
go to http://www.elong.net for flights and hotel rooms, they have fabulous deals, and I used them all the time when traveling in China. If you should have a problem there is a phone number to call and an english speaking person if you require one. The usual discount is at least 45% and usually much higher than that. If you intend to travel and sightsee, and its impossible to go to China without buying something you might want more than $2000 USA. My advise is dont bring cash with you !! Use your ATM card to access your bank account and withdraw smaller amounts as you need them, its much safer that way.
Very few places take credit cards, usually only high end hotels will accept them. You cannot use them for shopping etc and you cannot withdraw a cash advance on a credit card unless it is linked to your bank account and you have a pin number on it as well. Banks are very suspicious of credit cards as well. Credit cards not a good plan while in China
If you don’t have a problem with roommates China has a lot of hostels.
Check for hostels on line and possibly your friend can help out.
A room with 4 or 6 can cost as little as $4 to $10 a night or more.
Private rooms with bath anywhere from 12/15 on up.
Get one for 3 or 4 days and then if you like it stay if not you should be able to find another, better one.
Let your friend rent a house for you! It’s cheaper and you can know more of Chinese life.
$2,000 is far more than enough.
